Silk Poncho
Every silk poncho here is lined, and that is the whole difference. An unlined layer clings to what is underneath and goes sheer in bright light. A lined one falls the way it did on the hanger, all evening. Twelve colourways in a silk and viscose blend, free size, R1,199 to R1,699. Free delivery over R1,500, or collect from Constantia Village within 24 hours.
Silk Ponchos, Lined So They Fall Instead of Cling
A silk poncho solves one specific problem: you have a sleeveless dress and a cold venue, and a jacket would ruin the line of it. Ours are lined, which almost no poncho in this market is. The lining stops the outer fabric from gripping whatever is underneath and from going sheer under bright light, so the shape you saw on the hanger is the shape you wear all evening.
Free size, twelve colourways, R1,199 to R1,699. Every one is cut long enough to cover the upper arm completely.
What Our Silk Ponchos Are Actually Made Of
The shell is 30% silk and 70% viscose. The lining is 95% viscose and 5% elastane. One piece differs: the original Silk Poncho is 40% silk and 60% viscose and is made in Italy.
These are a silk blend, not pure silk, and the blend is deliberate. Silk at this weight creases the moment you sit down and clings in heat. Viscose carries the weight that makes a poncho hang in a straight line instead of riding up on the shoulders. If you want the drape, you want the blend. More on the fabric across the range in our silk stunners edit.
How Low Is the Neckline
The neckline sits roughly a hand's width below the collarbone, lower than a crew neck and higher than a scoop.
We are specific about this because our one review says so. A verified buyer gave the Blue Silk Poncho four stars in January 2026 and wrote: "Very pretty but the neck is a bit low for me." She is right, and it is the only thing anyone has flagged. Wear a camisole or a fitted vest underneath if you want the neckline closed, which is how most of our customers wear it anyway.
What a Poncho Costs in South Africa
Ponchos in South Africa range from about R36 to about R1,700, and the price tells you what kind you are looking at. Prices below were checked on Google on 4 August 2026.
| Type | Example | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable rain poncho | Mr Price Sport, PVC | R36 |
| Knit fashion poncho | Lizzard, Christene | R300 |
| Waterproof outdoor poncho | Dirt Road Outfitters, Wildcoast | R395 |
| Fleece lined waterproof | Ruggedwear | R532 to R888 |
| Upcycled sari poncho | Grand Funk, Jonie | R550 |
| Unlined silk blend top | Habiba Boho Boutique | R595 |
| Lined silk blend poncho | Something Pretty | R1,199 to R1,699 |
Under R600 you are buying either rain gear or an unlined single layer. The step up to R1,199 buys the lining, the free size cut and the finished hem. It is the difference between a layer you tolerate and one you reach for.
Poncho, Ruana, Cape or Shawl
A poncho is closed all the way round with an opening for the head. A ruana is open down the front like a long wrap. A cape fastens at the neck and hangs behind the arms. A shawl is a flat rectangle you drape and hold in place yourself.
Ours are true ponchos, which is why they stay put. A silk scarf or wrap needs your hand on it all night. A poncho does not.
How to Wear a Silk Poncho
Over a sleeveless dress
A silk poncho does its best work over a sleeveless dress. Keep the dress narrow so the volume sits in one place. It works over anything in silk dresses and over a straight silk skirt with a fitted top.
With jeans
Balance a poncho with something fitted below it. A slim jean and a plain vest is the whole outfit. Our reversible jeans sit well under it because there is no bulk at the waist.
On a plane or in aggressive aircon
A silk blend poncho folds to nothing in a bag and comes out without a crease line, which a linen or cotton layer will not do. That is the reason customers come back for a second one.
Where to Try One On in Cape Town
All three of our stores carry the poncho range: Constantia Village, Cavendish Square and Sea Point. Constantia holds click and collect stock, usually ready within 24 hours. Full addresses and hours are on our stores page, and there is more on the newest one in our Sea Point opening.
If you would rather order, delivery is free on orders over R1,500 and tracked nationwide.
Looking After It
Wash a silk blend poncho cold, by hand or on a delicate cycle, with mild detergent and no wringing. Press the water out, dry in the shade, steam lightly. The blend takes a steamer better than pure silk does and will not water mark the way pure silk can.
Ponchos sit alongside the rest of the range in the silk edit and in tops. Newest colours are the Ink, Black and Olive, and the Blue Embroidered is the one to look at for an evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you wear a silk poncho?
Keep everything under it fitted. A silk poncho adds volume across the shoulders, so a narrow dress, a slim jean or a fitted vest balances it. Over a sleeveless dress it covers the upper arm without the weight of a jacket. Add a slim belt at the waist if you want more shape.
Are your silk ponchos 100% silk?
No. The shell is 30% silk and 70% viscose, and the lining is 95% viscose with 5% elastane. The original Silk Poncho is 40% silk and 60% viscose, made in Italy. The blend is deliberate: pure silk at this weight creases and clings, while the viscose gives the weight that makes a poncho hang straight.
How low is the neckline on a silk poncho?
The neckline sits about a hand's width below the collarbone, lower than a crew neck and higher than a scoop. One of our buyers flagged it as a little low for her, so we now say so plainly. A camisole or fitted vest underneath closes it if you prefer more coverage.
How much are ponchos in South Africa?
Ponchos in South Africa cost between roughly R36 and R1,700, depending on the type. Disposable rain ponchos start near R36, knit fashion ponchos sit around R300, waterproof outdoor ones run R395 to R888, and unlined silk blend layers are near R595. Our lined silk blend ponchos are R1,199 to R1,699.
What is the difference between a poncho and a ruana?
A poncho is closed all the way round with an opening for the head. A ruana is open down the front like a long wrap and has to be held or belted. A poncho stays where you put it, which is why it works for a full evening. Ours are true ponchos.
Do silk ponchos keep you dry?
No. Silk blend ponchos are fashion layers, not rain gear. If you need waterproof cover, a PVC or coated rain poncho is the right product. A silk blend poncho is for warmth, coverage and drape, not weather.
Are silk ponchos one size?
Yes. Every poncho in this collection is European free size, cut to fall from the shoulder rather than to fit the body. That covers roughly a South African 8 to 18. Length is consistent across colourways, so if one fits you they all will.
Do you deliver silk ponchos across South Africa?
Yes, tracked nationwide, and delivery is free on orders over R1,500. Click and collect is available from Constantia Village, usually ready within 24 hours. Cavendish Square and Sea Point also carry the range in store.
